Frequently asked questions about estate accounting
Who is responsible for an estate’s taxes and accounting?
Which taxes apply to an estate?
What is the difference between a testamentary trust and a direct distribution?
How can an estate avoid paying too much tax?
Our tax team can identify the tax credits that apply and the most suitable strategies to reduce taxes.
Which tax returns must be filed after a death?
First, the deceased person’s final returns must be filed: the T1 federal return (plus the TP-1 for Québec residents). The estate then files its own trust returns, the T3 (plus the TP-646 in Québec), for income earned after death. Before distributing the assets, the executor should obtain a clearance certificate from the Canada Revenue Agency (and from Revenu Québec in Québec). We prepare all of these documents.
How much does an accountant cost for an estate?
The price depends on the complexity of the estate: number of returns, real estate, investments or a business. We give you a clear price after a first assessment. Call us at 514-270-0500 or use our contact page.
