Ontario taxes we handle for you
HST — 13% (5% federal + 8% Ontario). You must register once your taxable sales exceed $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Returns are filed monthly, quarterly or annually with the CRA.
Corporate income tax — Ontario small business rate of 3.2% on the first $500,000 of active business income of a Canadian-controlled private corporation (about 12.2% combined with federal tax); general rate 11.5% (about 26.5% combined). Ontario tax is calculated on the federal T2 return (Schedule 500): one return, filed with the CRA.
Payroll — CPP, EI, federal and Ontario income tax are withheld and remitted together to the CRA. T4 slips are due by the last day of February.
Employer Health Tax (EHT) — payable only if your annual Ontario payroll exceeds the $1 million exemption (eligible employers). Rates from 0.98% to 1.95%; annual return due March 15.
WSIB — most Ontario employers must register with the WSIB within 10 days of hiring their first worker.
Annual return — Ontario corporations file their annual return through the Ontario Business Registry.

Example: an IT consultant in Toronto
An incorporated IT consultant in Toronto bills $150,000 a year to Ontario clients.
- Sales are well above $30,000, so the corporation must be registered for HST and charge 13%: $19,500 of HST collected over the year.
- HST paid on business expenses (software, equipment, phone) is claimed back as input tax credits, and only the difference is remitted to the CRA.
- Profit is taxed at the small business rate, and we help choose the right mix of salary and dividends for the owner.
What we do for this client: monthly bookkeeping, quarterly HST returns, payroll and T4/T5 slips, the T2 corporate return and the owner’s personal return.
