What Edmonton businesses need to know
GST only — no provincial sales tax in Alberta: you charge the 5% GST once your taxable sales exceed $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, and file your returns with the CRA.
Two corporate returns — most Alberta corporations file the federal T2 with the CRA and an AT1 return with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration.
City of Edmonton business licence — the City requires a business licence for certain business types; many low-impact home-based and office businesses do not need one. We help you check what applies to your activity.
Contractors and trades — construction businesses must report payments to subcontractors on the T5018 return, and most employers must register with WCB Alberta. Workers on remote or northern projects also have specific rules for travel and accommodation expenses.
Government and public sector suppliers — many Edmonton consultants and small firms work under contract with the province, health services or universities: clean books, timely GST returns and clear invoicing make those contracts easier to manage.
Property owners — Alberta has no land transfer tax, only land title registration fees. See all Alberta rules on our Alberta page.

Only for certain business types regulated by the City of Edmonton. Many low-impact home-based and office businesses do not need one. We help you check what applies to your activity.
What is the sales tax in Edmonton?
Only the 5% federal GST. Alberta has no provincial sales tax.
What is the T5018 and do I need to file it?
If construction is your main activity, you must report the payments you make to subcontractors for construction services on the T5018 return. We prepare it from your bookkeeping.
