What Toronto businesses need to know
HST at 13% — once your taxable sales exceed $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, you must register and charge HST, then file monthly, quarterly or annual returns with the CRA.
Business licences — the City of Toronto requires a municipal licence for certain activities, such as eating establishments, renovators and personal services settings. Most office-based businesses (consultants, agencies, online services) do not need one.
Business name — if you operate as a sole proprietor under a name other than your own, you must register that name with the Ontario Business Registry.
Employers — payroll deductions are remitted to the CRA, the Employer Health Tax applies only above $1 million of Ontario payroll, and most employers must register with the WSIB.
Incorporated consultants — if your corporation works like an employee for a single client, as many IT and finance contractors do, it may be considered a personal services business: it then loses the small business rate and pays a much higher tax rate. We review your contracts and structure to reduce that risk.
Property owners — buying a property in Toronto means paying the Municipal Land Transfer Tax on top of Ontario’s land transfer tax, and owners of residential properties must file the annual Vacant Home Tax declaration. See all Ontario rules on our Ontario page.

Example: an IT contractor in Toronto
An incorporated IT consultant bills a Toronto bank $180,000 a year through a personal corporation.
- The corporation registers for HST and charges 13%: $23,400 of HST collected over the year, minus input tax credits on business expenses.
- Because the consultant works mostly for one client, we review the contract and working conditions to limit the risk of being treated as a personal services business.
- We choose the right mix of salary and dividends and plan the corporation’s tax instalments.
What we do for this client: monthly bookkeeping, quarterly HST returns, payroll and T4/T5 slips, the T2 corporate return and the owner’s personal return.

Frequently asked questions: accountant in Toronto
Can an online accounting firm based in Montréal handle my Toronto business?
Yes. Your corporate and personal income tax, HST and payroll deductions are all filed with the CRA, and we know the Ontario rules. We work with Toronto clients entirely online.
Do I need a business licence in Toronto?
Only for certain activities regulated by the City, such as eating establishments, renovators or personal services settings. Most office-based businesses do not need a municipal licence, but sole proprietors using a business name must register it with the Ontario Business Registry.
What is the HST rate in Toronto?
13%, like everywhere in Ontario: 5% federal GST plus 8% provincial. It is filed on a single return with the CRA.
I am an incorporated IT consultant in Toronto. Am I a personal services business?
You may be, if your corporation works like an employee for a single client. A personal services business loses the small business rate and pays a much higher tax rate. We review your contracts and working conditions and advise you on how to reduce that risk.
Do Toronto landlords pay extra taxes?
Buyers in Toronto pay the Municipal Land Transfer Tax on top of Ontario’s land transfer tax, and owners of residential properties must file an annual Vacant Home Tax declaration. Rental income is reported on form T776 with your tax return.
Do I need to meet you in person?
No. Everything is done online: secure document sharing, phone and video meetings.
Do you serve the whole GTA?
Yes: Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Oakville and the rest of the Greater Toronto Area, as well as all of Ontario.
How much does an accountant cost for a small business in Toronto?
At LeComptable.ca, packages start at $150 per month, the same price everywhere in Canada. The T2 corporate return is $500 + tax for package clients. See our pricing.
