Atlantic Canada taxes we handle for you
HST — 15% in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador; 14% in Nova Scotia since April 1, 2025. One return, filed with the CRA. You must register once your taxable sales exceed $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters.
Clients in other provinces — the rate you charge depends on where the supply is made: a Halifax business billing a client in Ontario generally charges Ontario’s 13% HST, and 5% GST to a client in Alberta.
Corporate income tax — small business rates on the first $500,000 of active business income of a Canadian-controlled private corporation: New Brunswick 2.5%, Nova Scotia 2.5%, Prince Edward Island 1%, Newfoundland and Labrador 2.5%. General rates: New Brunswick 14%, Nova Scotia 14%, PEI 16%, Newfoundland and Labrador 15%. Provincial tax is calculated on the federal T2, filed with the CRA.
Payroll — CPP, EI, federal and provincial income tax are withheld and remitted to the CRA; T4 slips are due by the last day of February. Newfoundland and Labrador also has a payroll tax for larger employers (Health and Post-Secondary Education Tax).
Workers’ compensation — WorkSafeNB, WCB Nova Scotia, WCB PEI or WorkplaceNL, depending on your province.
Annual returns — corporations file an annual return with their provincial registry (Service New Brunswick, the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies, the PEI Corporate Registry or the Newfoundland and Labrador Registry of Companies).

Example: a contractor in Moncton
An incorporated renovation contractor in Moncton bills $150,000 a year to New Brunswick clients.
- Sales are well above $30,000, so the corporation must be registered for HST and charge 15%: $22,500 of HST collected over the year.
- HST paid on materials, tools and vehicles is claimed back as input tax credits, and only the difference is remitted to the CRA.
- As an employer, it remits source deductions to the CRA and reports to WorkSafeNB.
What we do for this client: monthly bookkeeping, HST returns, payroll and T4 slips, the T2 corporate return and the owner’s personal return.
