Alberta taxes we handle for you
GST only — 5%, filed with the CRA. There is no provincial sales tax in Alberta. You must register for GST once your taxable sales exceed $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters.
Corporate income tax — Alberta small business rate of 2% on the first $500,000 of active business income of a Canadian-controlled private corporation (about 11% combined with federal tax); general rate 8% (about 23% combined).
Separate Alberta corporate return (AT1) — unlike most provinces, Alberta collects its own corporate income tax. Most Alberta corporations file an AT1 return with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration (TRA), in addition to the federal T2 filed with the CRA.
Payroll — CPP, EI, federal and Alberta income tax are withheld and remitted to the CRA. Alberta has no provincial payroll or health tax. T4 slips are due by the last day of February.
WCB Alberta — most employers must register with the Workers’ Compensation Board within 15 days of hiring their first worker.
Annual return — Alberta corporations file an annual return with the Alberta Corporate Registry.
